In addition to performing at events and dancing in competitions, Highland Dancers have the opportunity to progress through Medal Testing exams held each year. ABRMHD dancers perform their exams according to the Scottish Dance Teachers Alliance (SDTA).
In these exams, dancers are judged individually against a standard level. In moving through the levels dancers learn different and progressively harder steps and dances. Dancers may also take theory exams which not only help with understanding the techniques of dance, but can also prepare them for their “teachers” exams. Dance exams are marked out Fail, Pass, Commended or Highly Commended, while theory exams are marked out of Fail, Pass, Merit and Honours. Dancers who successfully complete their exams will receive a certificate and medal from SDTA.
